Home trick to clean the drain and pipes without calling the plumber…

🚿 Easy Home Trick to Clean a Slow Drain

For a slow or mildly clogged household drain, you can often try a simple method before calling a plumber.

🧂 Baking soda + vinegar method

  1. Remove standing water from the sink if possible.
  2. Pour about ½ cup of baking soda down the drain.
  3. Add about ½ cup of white vinegar.
  4. Cover the drain with a stopper or cloth for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Flush with plenty of hot tap water.

The fizzing reaction can help loosen some organic residue and odors, but it won’t reliably dissolve a serious blockage.

🪠 A better option for many clogs

A plunger is often more effective. Add enough water to cover the plunger cup, create a good seal, and pump firmly several times. For a sink with an overflow opening, cover that opening with a wet cloth while plunging.

⚠️ Don’t mix drain chemicals

Never combine commercial drain cleaners with vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or other cleaning products. Dangerous chemical reactions can produce toxic fumes or heat.

If the drain is completely blocked, repeatedly backs up, smells strongly of sewage, or multiple drains in the house are affected, the problem may be deeper in the plumbing and a plumber may be necessary.

Also, the baking-soda-and-vinegar trick is mainly a light-maintenance/odor remedy—not a guaranteed pipe-cleaning solution.
