Be your own dentist! Here are some tips for removing tartar buildup at home.

You can reduce plaque buildup at home, but once plaque hardens into tartar (dental calculus), you generally shouldn’t try to scrape it off yourself. Tartar is firmly attached to the teeth and is best removed professionally.

What you can safely do at home

  • Brush twice a day for about two minutes with fluoride toothpaste.

  • Clean between your teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes.

  • Consider an electric toothbrush if it helps you clean consistently.

  • Limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks, which encourage plaque formation.

  • Don’t use sharp objects or DIY scraping tools to chip tartar away—you can damage enamel or injure your gums.

  • An antiseptic or fluoride mouthwash can complement brushing, but it won’t remove established tartar.

When to see a dentist

If you already have hard yellow/brown deposits around the gumline, bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gum swelling, or loose teeth, a dentist or dental hygienist can remove the calculus safely and check for gum disease.

So the headline “Be your own dentist” is misleading: home care is excellent for preventing and controlling plaque, but established tartar generally requires professional removal.
