How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method

Over time, lotions, soaps, natural skin oils, and everyday grime form a stubborn microscopic film over your jewelry, making even the most expensive diamonds, gold, and silver look cloudy and dull.
You don’t need harsh commercial chemical dips or an ultrasonic machine to bring back their sparkle. A simple, gentle kitchen method works wonders for most solid jewelry pieces.

The Simple DIY Jewelry Cleaning Method

This method is safe for solid gold, platinum, and diamonds. (Scroll down for important warnings on delicate stones and pearls!)

What You Need:

  • A small bowl
  • Warm (not boiling) water
  • A few drops of gentle mild dish soap (like blue Dawn)
  • A soft-bristled baby toothbrush
  • A clean microfiber cloth or lint-free towel

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Soak It: Fill the bowl with warm water and mix in a few drops of dish soap. Drop your jewelry in and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. This softens and loosens dried-up lotions, oils, and stubborn grime stuck in tight settings.
  2. Gently Scrub: Take each piece out and use the soft-bristled baby toothbrush to gently clean around the settings, underneath stones, and along the chain links. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which can scratch softer metals.
  3. Rinse Thoroughly: Move the jewelry to a separate bowl of clean, warm water (or hold it under a gentle stream of running water) to wash away all soapy residue. Pro Tip: Always close or plug your sink drain first so nothing accidentally slips down the pipe!
  4. Dry and Buff: Pat the jewelry dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth and buff gently to restore a brilliant shine.

⚠️ Crucial Rules for Delicate Jewelry

Not all jewelry can handle soap, water, and scrubbing. Keep these exceptions in mind before you start:
  • Porous Stones (Opals, Pearls, Turquoise, Coral): Never soak pearls or opals in water. Pearls are strung on silk thread that weakens when wet, and porous stones can absorb chemicals or water and permanently discolor. Wipe them gently with a damp cloth instead.
  • Costume Jewelry: Cheap fashion jewelry or glued-in rhinestones can lose their backing or have their plating strip away if soaked. Wipe these down quickly with a barely damp cloth.
  • Silver with Antique Oxidation: If your silver jewelry has intentional dark shading (oxidized details) to create contrast, heavy cleaning and scrubbing can strip away that antique finish.
