The Sweet Fruit That May Help Keep Blood Sugar in Check

If you’re referring to a headline about one sweet fruit that may help with blood-sugar control, berries—particularly strawberries and blueberries—are a good evidence-based choice.

🍓 Why berries?

  • Fiber: Slows digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, which can help moderate the rise in blood glucose.

  • Polyphenols: Berries contain compounds such as anthocyanins that have been studied for their potential metabolic benefits.

  • Relatively low carbohydrate density: A typical serving contains less carbohydrate than many tropical or dried fruits.

  • Whole fruit: Eating the whole fruit provides fiber that is largely lost when fruit is turned into juice.

Other whole fruits can absolutely fit into a diabetes-friendly diet. Apples, pears, oranges, kiwi, and guava are also nutritious choices.

If you have diabetes

You generally don’t need to eliminate fruit. Portion size and the overall carbohydrate content of the meal matter. Whole fruit is usually preferable to fruit juice, which can deliver a large amount of sugar with little fiber.

And no fruit should be considered a treatment that “cures” diabetes or guarantees normal blood sugar. If you’re taking diabetes medication, don’t change it based on a food claim.
