As a BRAIN Doctor, I’m SHOCKED THIS Vitamin Raises Stroke Risk Overnight Senior Health

That headline is far more dramatic than the evidence supports. If it’s referring to vitamin B3 (niacin), there is a legitimate scientific concern about excessive niacin, but there is no evidence that taking an ordinary dose causes a stroke “overnight.”

A 2024 NIH-funded study found that a metabolite produced when the body processes excess niacin was associated with increased cardiovascular risk, including heart attack and stroke. The researchers specifically raised concerns about too much niacin, not normal dietary intake. National Institutes of Health (NIH)

In fact, research on B vitamins overall doesn’t show that they generally increase stroke risk; some studies have found neutral or potentially protective effects. PubMed+1

What seniors should take from this

  • Don’t suddenly stop a prescribed vitamin or medication because of a social-media headline.

  • Avoid high-dose vitamin supplements unless there’s a medical reason for them.

  • Getting vitamins from a balanced diet is generally preferable to taking megadoses.

  • If you’re taking a high-dose niacin/B3 supplement, discuss the dose with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have cardiovascular or liver problems.

And importantly, vitamin supplements aren’t the main way to prevent stroke. Controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and other established risk factors is much more important. Current stroke-prevention guidance recommends regular physical activity as part of prevention. guidelinecentral.com
