Constant throat mucus is usually a symptom, not a disease itself. Common causes include postnasal drip, allergies, acid reflux, asthma, respiratory infections, smoking, and exposure to irritating or polluted air.
1. Postnasal drip
If you have a blocked or runny nose, allergies, or sinus irritation, mucus can drain down the back of your throat. You may notice frequent throat-clearing, especially when lying down.
What may help: saline nasal spray/rinse, treating known allergies, drinking fluids, and avoiding smoke and other irritants.
2. “Silent” acid reflux
Acid can reach the throat without causing classic heartburn. Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) can cause excessive mucus, throat clearing, hoarseness, chronic cough, or a sensation of something stuck in the throat.
If symptoms are worse after meals or when lying down, try avoiding large meals close to bedtime and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician.
3. Allergies
Pollen, dust mites, mold, pets, and other allergens can increase nasal mucus and trigger throat irritation.
4. Asthma or another airway problem
Asthma and some other airway conditions can cause chronic coughing and mucus. If you also have wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath, medical evaluation is important.
5. Smoking and environmental irritants
Cigarette smoke, vaping, pollution, and other irritants can stimulate mucus production and keep the airways inflamed.
