Blood circulation: here are the foods you should eat every day to prevent blood clots

Blood Circulation: Foods That Support Healthy Blood Vessels

There is no food that can guarantee prevention of blood clots. Blood clots such as DVT and pulmonary embolism have many risk factors—including prolonged immobility, surgery, certain illnesses, previous clots, obesity, and increasing age.

However, a heart-healthy eating pattern can support cardiovascular health and reduce some factors associated with clot risk.

Foods to include regularly

  • Vegetables and fruit — Aim for plenty of variety and different colors.

  • Beans, lentils and chickpeas — Good sources of fiber and plant protein.

  • Whole grains — Oats, whole-wheat foods, and other minimally processed grains provide fiber.

  • Fish — Particularly fish that provides unsaturated fats.

  • Nuts and seeds — Choose unsalted varieties and reasonable portions.

  • Healthy oils — Unsaturated fats such as olive oil can replace saturated fats.

  • Lean protein — Eggs, poultry, seafood, beans and lentils can fit into a balanced diet.

At the same time, limit highly processed foods, excessive sodium, added sugars, and foods high in saturated fat.

Don’t forget movement

For preventing venous blood clots, movement is especially important. If you’re sitting for a long period—for example, during travel—get up and walk around every 1–2 hours when possible and move your legs while seated
