Just 1 Cup Makes Peace Lily Bloom Like Crazy (Even the Ugly Ones)

If you’re referring to the viral “one cup” trick for peace lilies, be careful: there isn’t a magic liquid that reliably makes a struggling peace lily bloom.

For a healthier plant and better flowering, try this instead:

  • Give it bright, indirect light. Too little light is one of the most common reasons peace lilies don’t flower.
  • Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, rather than following a rigid schedule. Water thoroughly and let excess drain away.
  • Feed lightly during active growth. A balanced houseplant fertilizer used according to its label can provide nutrients needed for healthy growth and flowering. Avoid overfertilizing.
  • Keep it warm and away from harsh drafts.
  • Don’t constantly repot it. Peace lilies can tolerate being somewhat root-bound, and repotting isn’t a guaranteed way to trigger flowers.

What about the “one cup” of something?

If the trick calls for coffee, milk, sugar water, rice water, or another kitchen ingredient, I wouldn’t recommend routinely pouring it into the pot. These mixtures can encourage mold, pests, unpleasant odors, or nutrient imbalances.

The closest thing to a reliable “one-cup” solution is simply a cup of plain water—when the plant actually needs watering. The real flowering trigger is appropriate light, watering, nutrition, and growing conditions.
