How to wash yellowed pillows: 3 tips to keep them white and new

If your pillows have turned yellow from sweat, body oils, and moisture, you can often freshen them up with a few simple steps. Check the care label first, because washing instructions vary by pillow type.

3 tips to whiten yellowed pillows

  1. Pre-treat the yellow areas
Mix a small amount of liquid laundry detergent with warm water and gently work it into the stained areas. Let it sit for about 15–30 minutes before washing.
  2. Wash according to the care label
For washable synthetic or down-alternative pillows, use a gentle cycle with an appropriate amount of detergent. An oxygen-based laundry whitener can help with yellowing if the manufacturer permits it. Avoid chlorine bleach unless the care instructions specifically allow it.
  3. Dry them completely
Dry pillows thoroughly on the recommended setting, fluffing them periodically. Do not put a pillow back on the bed while it is still damp, because trapped moisture can encourage mildew and odors.

Extra tip: Use a washable pillow protector underneath your pillowcase. It helps prevent sweat and oils from reaching the pillow and can greatly slow future yellowing.

If the pillow has a memory-foam or latex core, don’t put it in the washing machine unless its manufacturer specifically says you can.
