How to Remove Bleach Stains from Fabrics with 2 Tricks

Bleach permanently strips color from fabrics by destroying the dye molecules, which means you cannot technically “clean” a bleach stain out. However, you can **restore the color** or neutralize the bleach to salvage the garment.

Here are 2 effective tricks to fix or camouflage bleach stains:

—

### Trick 1: Neutralize with Sodium Thiosulfate (Best for Stopping Fresh Spills)

If bleach has just splashed onto a garment, stopping the chemical reaction immediately prevents further damage.

* **What you need:** Sodium thiosulfate (commonly found in aquarium water dechlorinator or photography fixer) and cold water.
* **How to do it:**
1. Rinse the stained area immediately with cold water to dilute the bleach.
2. Apply a few drops of liquid sodium thiosulfate directly to the stain. This instantly neutralizes any remaining active chlorine bleach.
3. Rinse the fabric thoroughly and wash as normal.

### Trick 2: Color Restoration with Fabric Dye or Alcohol (Best for Dark Fabrics)

If the color is already gone, you can mimic the surrounding color or re-dye the spot.

* **What you need:** A permanent fabric marker, a Sharpie matching the garment’s color, or rubbing alcohol (for cotton/polyester blends).
* **How to do it:**
* **The Marker Method (Quick Fix):** For small spots on dark clothes (like black jeans or navy shirts), carefully dab the tip of a matching fabric marker or Sharpie onto the bleached spot. Lightly feather the edges with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to blend it seamlessly into the surrounding fabric.
* **The Re-Dye Method:** For larger stains, use a small bottle of liquid fabric dye (like RIT dye) matching your clothing. Mix a tiny drop with warm water, dab it precisely onto the bleached area with a cotton swab, let it set for a few minutes, rinse with cold water, and heat-set it with an iron if required by the dye instructions.

> **Pro-Tip:** Always test these methods on a hidden seam or the inside of the garment first to ensure the fabric and color react well!

Is the stained garment a dark color or something light like white or pastel?
