These Visible Signs May Be Hiding Liver Disease

Some liver problems cause no symptoms at first, but certain changes in your skin, eyes, abdomen, or overall appearance can be warning signs. These signs do not prove you have liver disease, but they deserve medical evaluation—especially when several occur together.

8 signs worth paying attention to

  1. Yellow skin or yellowing of the whites of the eyes
This is called jaundice and can occur when bilirubin builds up in the body.
  2. Swelling of the abdomen
Fluid accumulation, called ascites, can occur with advanced liver disease.
  3. Swollen legs or ankles
Fluid retention can occur in advanced liver disease, although there are many other possible causes.
  4. Easy bruising or bleeding
Significant liver dysfunction can interfere with proteins involved in blood clotting.
  5. Small spider-like blood vessels on the skin
Spider angiomas can occur in people with chronic liver disease, although they can also appear for other reasons.
  6. Red palms
Persistent redness of the palms (palmar erythema) can be associated with chronic liver disease, but it isn’t specific to it.
  7. Itchy skin
Persistent itching can sometimes occur with liver or bile-flow disorders.
  8. Muscle loss or unexplained weight loss
Advanced chronic liver disease can affect nutrition and muscle mass.

🚨 Don’t wait for visible symptoms

Liver disease can be silent, so normal-looking skin doesn’t necessarily mean your liver is healthy. Risk factors such as heavy alcohol use, obesity, diabetes, viral hepatitis, or certain medications can increase the need for screening or medical evaluation.

Seek urgent medical attention for new severe jaundice, vomiting blood, black/tarry stools, severe abdominal swelling, confusion, or extreme drowsiness.

Bottom line: A visible change isn’t a diagnosis. If you notice persistent jaundice, abdominal swelling, unusual bruising, or other concerning changes, a clinician can investigate with an examination and appropriate blood tests and imaging.
