Protect Your Home and Wallet: Unplug These 5 Appliances When You’re Done Using Them

5 appliances you may want to unplug when you’re done using them

The viral advice to “always unplug these appliances” is a little exaggerated. Most modern appliances are designed to remain plugged in safely, but some consume standby electricity, and unplugging certain devices can reduce both energy use and risk.

  1. Toaster 🍞
Unplugging it after use is a sensible safety habit. Crumbs and heating elements mean it shouldn’t be left operating unattended.

  2. Electric kettle ☕
Once boiling is complete, unplugging it prevents standby electricity use and ensures it can’t accidentally be activated or continue heating.

  3. Coffee maker ☕
Some models continue drawing power or keep a warming plate hot after brewing. Unplugging after use saves energy and reduces heat-related risk.

  4. Hair straightener or curling iron 💇
These are worth unplugging because they produce substantial heat. Forgetting to switch one off can create a fire hazard.

  5. Portable heaters 🔥
These are high-power heating appliances and should not be left running unattended. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and unplug when they’re no longer needed.

What about the electricity bill?

Many electronics use a small amount of “standby” or “phantom” power while plugged in. Unplugging devices you rarely use can reduce this consumption, although the savings from an individual small appliance are usually modest.

A power strip with an on/off switch can make it easier to disconnect several standby devices at once.

Important: Don’t unplug appliances while they’re operating if doing so could damage the device or create a hazard. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, particularly for refrigerators, freezers, medical equipment, computers, and other continuously operating appliances.
