What does the color of your urine say about your health?

đź’§ What Does the Color of Your Urine Say About Your Health?

Urine color can offer clues about hydration and sometimes health, but color alone cannot diagnose a medical condition.

  • Pale yellow: Usually consistent with good hydration.

  • Dark yellow or amber: Often indicates concentrated urine and may mean you need more fluids.

  • Very clear/colorless: Can occur when you’ve consumed a lot of water. Persistently excessive thirst and urination should be discussed with a clinician.

  • Orange: Can occur with dehydration or certain medications and supplements. Persistent unexplained orange urine should be checked.

  • Pink or red: Sometimes caused by foods such as beetroot, but it can also indicate blood in the urine. Unexplained blood needs medical evaluation.

  • Brown or tea-colored: Can occur with severe dehydration, certain medications, liver problems, or muscle injury. New or persistent brown urine warrants medical attention.

  • Blue or green: Uncommon and can result from medications, dyes, or occasionally infection.

  • Cloudy or milky: May occur because of crystals or dehydration, but can also accompany a urinary infection or other urinary conditions.

When to get checked

Don’t ignore persistent changes in urine color, particularly red, brown, or cloudy urine, or changes accompanied by pain, fever, burning during urination, back/flank pain, swelling, or reduced urine output.

Also remember that B vitamins and some medications can dramatically change urine color without indicating disease.

The most useful clue is a persistent change from your usual urine, rather than one unusual bathroom visit.
