If you’re referring to the viral “glass of salt in your car” hack, the usual claim is that salt helps absorb moisture and reduce condensation or musty odors inside the vehicle.
There is a little science behind the idea: salt can absorb some moisture under the right conditions. But a glass of ordinary table salt isn’t a very effective car dehumidifier, especially in a humid environment.
A safer way to use the idea
If you want to experiment:
- Put a small amount of salt in a stable, wide container.
- Place it somewhere it cannot tip over while driving.
- Check it regularly and replace it if it becomes damp.
- Keep it away from metal surfaces because salty moisture can contribute to corrosion.
For significant condensation, a commercial moisture absorber or reusable desiccant is generally much more effective.
And if your car repeatedly develops foggy windows, damp carpets, or a musty smell, don’t just mask the problem. Check for water leaks, blocked drains, wet cabin filters, or an air-conditioning issue.
