How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Your Chest and Throat Naturally

Phlegm is often produced when your airways are irritated by a cold, allergies, smoke, or another respiratory infection. You can often make it easier to clear with simple measures.

1. Drink plenty of fluids

Water and warm drinks can help keep mucus thinner. Warm tea, broth, or soup can also soothe an irritated throat.

2. Try honey

A teaspoon of honey can soothe throat irritation and coughing. Never give honey to a child under 1 year old.

3. Use a humidifier

A cool-mist humidifier can add moisture to dry air and may make mucus easier to clear. Clean it regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Take a warm shower

Warm, moist air may temporarily loosen mucus and make coughing more comfortable.

5. Gargle with salt water

For mucus and irritation in the throat, gargle with warm salt water and spit it out.

6. Stay away from smoke

Cigarettes, vaping, wood smoke, and other airborne irritants can increase coughing and mucus production.

7. Don’t forcefully suppress a productive cough

Coughing is one of the body’s ways of removing mucus from the airways. Gentle coughing can help clear secretions.

What about ginger, lemon, or essential oils?

Warm lemon or ginger drinks can be soothing, but there isn’t strong evidence that they remove mucus from the lungs. Essential oils shouldn’t be inhaled directly or put into a nebulizer unless specifically recommended by a healthcare professional.

🚨 When to seek medical care

Get urgent medical attention if you have difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, blue/gray lips, severe weakness, or confusion.

See a healthcare professional if your cough or mucus is persistent, repeatedly returning, or getting worse, particularly if you have asthma, COPD, heart disease, or another chronic condition.

One important point: yellow or green phlegm doesn’t automatically mean you need antibiotics. Many viral respiratory infections can produce colored mucus.
