How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method

The aluminum foil and baking soda method is one of the fastest, most effective ways to strip tarnish off sterling silver and gold jewelry without harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbing.

* **Line a Bowl:** Take a small glass bowl or dish and line the inside completely with aluminum foil, making sure the shiny side faces up.
* **Add the Ingredients:** Place your tarnished jewelry directly on top of the foil, ensuring every piece makes physical contact with the metal. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of baking soda (and 1 tablespoon of salt) evenly over the items.
* **Pour Hot Water:** Carefully pour hot or boiling water into the bowl until the jewelry is completely submerged. The mixture will immediately begin to fizz as an electrochemical reaction transfers the dark tarnish off your jewelry and onto the aluminum foil.
* **Soak and Rinse:** Let the pieces sit in the solution for 5 to 10 minutes. Use tongs to remove them, rinse thoroughly under clean lukewarm water, and buff dry with a soft microfiber cloth.

**Important Safety Warning**
Never use this method on costume jewelry, pieces with glued-in settings, or jewelry containing soft, porous gemstones like pearls, opals, turquoise, amber, or emeralds, as the hot water and chemical reaction will permanently ruin them.
