The appliance most often singled out in this kind of headline is the toaster.
🔥 Why unplug a toaster before bed?
A toaster contains high-temperature heating elements. Although modern toasters have safety mechanisms, electrical faults, damaged cords, accumulated crumbs, or malfunctioning components can create a fire risk. Leaving an appliance energized when nobody is awake to notice a problem adds unnecessary risk.
A good nighttime routine is:
-
Unplug the toaster after use, particularly before going to sleep or leaving home.
-
Empty the crumb tray regularly and remove accumulated crumbs.
-
Keep the toaster away from curtains, paper towels, and other combustible materials.
-
Don’t use it if the cord, plug, or housing is damaged.
-
Never put metal utensils into a plugged-in toaster.
-
Don’t cover the toaster while it’s hot.
The same general principle applies to other portable heat-producing appliances. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions—some appliances are specifically designed for extended operation and shouldn’t simply be unplugged as a blanket rule.
And importantly, unplugging one appliance isn’t a substitute for smoke alarms and safe electrical wiring. Make sure working smoke alarms are installed and tested regularly.
