10 Important Side Effects of Metoprolol That You Need to Know

10 Important Side Effects of Metoprolol

Metoprolol is a beta-blocker used for conditions including high blood pressure, angina, certain abnormal heart rhythms, and some types of heart failure. Many people take it safely, but side effects can occur.

  1. Tiredness or weakness — particularly when starting treatment.
  2. Dizziness or lightheadedness — especially when standing up quickly.
  3. Slow heartbeat — metoprolol lowers heart rate, but an excessively slow pulse can be a problem.
  4. Low blood pressure — may cause dizziness, weakness, or fainting.
  5. Cold hands and feet — some people notice increased coldness in their extremities.
  6. Shortness of breath or wheezing — more concerning in people with asthma or other breathing conditions.
  7. Sleep disturbances or vivid dreams — can occur in some users.
  8. Depressed mood or reduced energy — mood changes are possible.
  9. Sexual difficulties — reduced libido or erectile dysfunction can occur.
  10. Worsening heart-failure symptoms — increasing ankle swelling, rapid weight gain, or worsening breathlessness should be reported.

🚨 One especially important warning

Don’t stop metoprolol abruptly unless a healthcare professional tells you to. Sudden withdrawal can cause a rapid increase in heart rate or blood pressure and may worsen angina or increase cardiovascular risk.

Seek urgent medical care for fainting, severe difficulty breathing, new or worsening chest pain, or a very slow heartbeat accompanied by weakness or dizziness.

Also, not every symptom that occurs while taking metoprolol is necessarily a side effect. Other medicines or the underlying heart condition may be responsible, so persistent or concerning symptoms should be evaluated rather than simply stopping the medication.
