Pain on the Left Side of the Body: What Could It Mean and When Should You Pay Attention?
Pain on the left side can come from something as simple as a muscle strain—or from a condition requiring urgent medical attention. The location of pain alone can’t tell you what’s causing it.
Common causes
💪 1. Muscle strain
Lifting, exercise, coughing, or an awkward movement can cause pain in the muscles of the chest, ribs, back, or side. It may worsen when you move or press on the area.
🦴 2. Nerve or joint problems
Irritated nerves or problems involving the spine, ribs, or joints can cause sharp, burning, tingling, or shooting pain.
🫃 3. Digestive problems
Gas, constipation, indigestion, and other gastrointestinal problems can cause discomfort on the left side of the abdomen.
🫘 4. Kidney problems
A kidney stone or infection can cause pain toward the side or back. Urinary symptoms, fever, nausea, or blood in the urine may occur.
🫁 5. Lung-related conditions
Infections or inflammation affecting the lungs or their surrounding tissues can sometimes cause pain that becomes worse with deep breathing or coughing.
❤️ 6. Heart-related pain
Heart problems can cause pressure, squeezing, heaviness, or discomfort in the chest. It may spread to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen.

Seek emergency medical help immediately if pain occurs with:
- Chest pressure or squeezing
- Shortness of breath
- Cold sweating
- Nausea or vomiting
- Fainting or severe weakness
