8 Plants That May Help Discourage Mice, Spiders & Insects 🌿

Plants can add pleasant scents to your home and garden, and some contain compounds that may repel certain insects. But a plant sitting in a pot isn’t a guaranteed pest-control system. For mice and established infestations, sealing entry points and removing food sources are much more effective.

Here are eight commonly suggested choices:

  1. Peppermint — Its strong scent may discourage some insects and rodents.

  2. Lavender — Its aromatic compounds can help repel certain insects.

  3. Rosemary — Its fragrant oils have demonstrated insect-repellent activity.

  4. Basil — Its aroma may discourage some flying insects.

  5. Marigolds — Some varieties contain compounds with insect-repellent properties.

  6. Lemongrass — Contains citronella-related compounds associated with mosquito repellency.

  7. Catnip — Contains nepetalactone, which has demonstrated mosquito-repellent activity.

  8. Chrysanthemums — Certain varieties contain natural pyrethrins used in insecticides.

What about mice and spiders?

For mice,-repelling effect is limited and varies by species and conditions. They work best as part of broader pest prevention rather than as a substitute don’t rely on peppermint or other plants to solve an infestation. Seal holes and gaps, keep food in sealed containers, and remove accessible food and nesting materials.

For spiders, reducing insects around the home and sealing cracks around windows, doors, and other entry points can be more effective than planting a particular herb.

Bottom line: These plants can be useful additions to a garden, but their pest-repelling effect is limited and varies by species and conditions. They work best as part of broader pest prevention rather than as a substitute for it.
