5 foods rich in estrogen

If by “foods rich in estrogen” you mean foods containing phytoestrogens—plant compounds that can weakly interact with estrogen receptors—these are five good examples:

  1. Soybeans and soy foods — Tofu, tempeh, edamame, and soy milk are particularly rich in isoflavones.
  2. Flaxseeds — One of the richest dietary sources of lignans, a type of phytoestrogen.
  3. Sesame seeds — Contain lignans and can be easily added to meals.
  4. Chickpeas and other legumes — Provide smaller amounts of various phytoestrogen compounds.
  5. Dried fruits — Prunes, dried apricots, and raisins contain lignans in varying amounts.

One important clarification

These foods do not contain human estrogen in significant amounts. Phytoestrogens aren’t equivalent to taking estrogen medication, and eating them doesn’t necessarily raise your body’s estrogen levels.

If you’re asking because of menopause, low estrogen, fertility, or hormone balance, the best foods and advice can differ depending on your goal.
