10 Important Side Effects of Metoprolol That You Need to Know

Metoprolol is a beta-blocker commonly used for high blood pressure, angina, certain heart-rhythm problems, and heart failure. Here are 10 important side effects to know:

  1. Slow heartbeat (bradycardia) — Your pulse may become slower than usual. Seek medical advice if you have significant dizziness, fainting, or weakness.

  2. Low blood pressure — May cause lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly.

  3. Dizziness — Often more noticeable when starting treatment or after a dose increase.

  4. Tiredness or weakness — A common effect, particularly early in treatment.

  5. Cold hands and feet — Reduced peripheral circulation can make your extremities feel unusually cold.

  6. Shortness of breath — Metoprolol can sometimes worsen breathing problems, particularly in people with asthma or certain lung conditions.

  7. Sleep problems or vivid dreams — Some people experience insomnia, unusual dreams, or disturbed sleep.

  8. Depressed mood — Mood changes have been reported, although they are not common in everyone taking metoprolol.

  9. Sexual problems — Decreased libido or erectile dysfunction can occur.

  10. Worsening heart failure or fluid retention — In some circumstances, particularly when treatment is started or the dose is increased, symptoms such as swelling, rapid weight gain, or increasing shortness of breath can occur.

Important warning

Do not stop metoprolol suddenly unless a clinician specifically tells you to. Abrupt withdrawal can cause a dangerous increase in heart rate or blood pressure and may worsen angina or increase the risk of serious heart problems.

Get urgent medical attention for fainting, severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, a very slow heartbeat with symptoms, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

The exact risks depend on whether you’re taking metoprolol tartrate or metoprolol succinate, your dose, and why it was prescribed.
