10 Early Signs of Dementia You Shouldn’t Ignore

Occasional forgetfulness is not automatically dementia. What matters is a persistent change that interferes with everyday life. Dementia is a general term for problems with memory, thinking, communication, and daily functioning caused by diseases affecting the brain.

Ten changes worth discussing with a healthcare professional are:

  1. Repeatedly forgetting recently learned information — such as the same conversation or appointment.
  2. Difficulty managing familiar tasks — struggling with bills, cooking, medications, or other routines that were previously easy.
  3. Getting lost in familiar places or becoming unusually confused about time or location.
  4. Increasing difficulty finding words or following conversations.
  5. Trouble planning or solving ordinary problems — such as following a familiar recipe or handling finances.
  6. Misplacing things and being unable to retrace your steps to find them.
  7. Poorer judgment — for example, making unusually risky financial or safety decisions.
  8. Withdrawal from hobbies or social activities because previously manageable activities have become difficult.
  9. Noticeable changes in mood, personality, or behavior that are out of character.
  10. Problems with visual-spatial skills — such as difficulty judging distances, navigating, or recognizing objects.

One important distinction

These symptoms don’t prove dementia. Depression, medication side effects, sleep disorders, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, hearing loss, infections, and other medical conditions can sometimes produce similar cognitive changes—and some are treatable.

If cognitive changes are gradually worsening or interfering with daily life, arrange a medical evaluation rather than waiting for them to become severe.

Sudden confusion or a sudden change in mental status is different: it can indicate a medical emergency, including stroke or delirium, and requires prompt medical attention.
