How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Chest and Throat Naturally

If you have phlegm or mucus in your chest or throat, the goal is usually to thin it and help your body clear it, rather than completely suppressing the cough.

🌿 Things you can try naturally

  1. Drink plenty of fluids
Water and warm liquids can help keep mucus thinner and easier to cough up.

  2. Try warm honey and lemon 🍯
Honey in warm water or tea can soothe an irritated throat and reduce coughing. Don’t give honey to children under 1 year old.

  3. Use humidified air
A cool-mist humidifier can help if dry air is irritating your throat. Keep the device clean to prevent mold and bacteria.

  4. Take a warm shower
The humid air may temporarily make thick mucus easier to clear. Avoid very hot steam, which can cause burns.

  5. Stay upright
Sitting or sleeping with your upper body elevated can make it easier to clear chest mucus, particularly when you’re congested.

  6. Avoid cigarette smoke
Smoking and secondhand smoke can increase mucus production and make respiratory symptoms worse.

  7. Try gentle coughing rather than constant throat-clearing
Repeated forceful throat-clearing can irritate the throat. A controlled cough can help move mucus upward.

What about ginger, turmeric, or herbal teas?

They may make you feel more comfortable, but there isn’t strong evidence that they remove mucus from the lungs. Be cautious with concentrated herbal supplements, particularly if you take prescription medicines.

🚨 When mucus needs medical attention

See a healthcare professional if phlegm lasts more than a few weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by wheezing, persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, or worsening breathlessness.

Seek urgent medical care for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up significant amounts of blood, blue/gray lips, or sudden severe deterioration.

Also, green or yellow mucus doesn’t automatically mean you need antibiotics; mucus color alone cannot reliably distinguish a bacterial infection from a viral illness.
