How to effectively clean ceramic glass cooktops without scratching them

How to clean a ceramic glass cooktop without scratching it

Ceramic and glass cooktops can look beautiful, but abrasive cleaners, rough scrubbers and scraping incorrectly can leave permanent scratches. The safest approach is gentle cleaning plus a cooktop scraper for stubborn, burned-on residue.

What you’ll need

  • Soft microfiber cloth
  • Warm water
  • A few drops of dishwashing liquid
  • White vinegar (optional)
  • A cleaner specifically labeled for ceramic/glass cooktops
  • A cooktop-safe razor scraper for hardened residue

Step-by-step

  1. Let the cooktop cool completely.
Never pour cold water onto a very hot surface; thermal shock can damage the glass.
  2. Remove loose crumbs.
Wipe them away with a dry microfiber cloth so they don’t get dragged across the surface.
  3. Clean with warm, soapy water.
Use a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Don’t use steel wool, scouring pads or gritty powders.
  4. For burned-on food, soften it first.
Place a warm, damp cloth over the residue for several minutes. Then gently loosen it.
  5. Use a cooktop scraper if necessary.
Hold a cooktop-safe razor scraper at a low angle and gently slide it underneath the residue. Don’t use a knife or scrape aggressively.
  6. Treat stubborn marks.
Apply a small amount of a manufacturer-approved ceramic cooktop cleaner, then gently buff with a microfiber cloth.
  7. Remove residue.
Wipe with a clean damp cloth and then dry and polish with another microfiber cloth.

🚫 Avoid these common mistakes

  • Steel wool or abrasive scouring pads
  • Powdered abrasive cleaners
  • Knives or ordinary razor blades used aggressively
  • Dragging heavy or rough cookware across the surface
  • Spraying cleaner into switches or control openings
  • Cleaning while the surface is extremely hot

Baking soda: Although commonly recommended online, it can be mildly abrasive. For a valuable or easily scratched cooktop, a purpose-made ceramic-glass cooktop cleaner is the safer choice.

One useful prevention tip

Clean spills as soon as the surface is cool enough to handle safely. Sugary foods, melted plastic and syrup can be particularly troublesome when they harden or burn onto the glass.

If your cooktop already has scratches, white cloudy marks, or burnt-on black rings, tell me which one you’re dealing with and I can give you the appropriate cleaning method.
