Homemade Weed Killer: Does It Really Work?
Yes—but “natural” doesn’t necessarily mean harmless or as effective as a commercial herbicide. Some homemade mixtures can kill the leaves they contact, but they may not kill the entire root system, so perennial weeds can grow back.
Common homemade options
1. White vinegar
-
Household vinegar can damage or kill young weeds when sprayed directly on their leaves.
-
It works mainly by contact, so thorough coverage is important.
-
Mature or deep-rooted perennial weeds may recover.
2. Boiling water
-
Pouring boiling water directly onto weeds can destroy their above-ground tissue.
-
It’s most useful for weeds growing in cracks, paths, and other areas where you don’t want surrounding plants.
-
It isn’t selective and can damage desirable plants and soil organisms it contacts.
3. Hand removal
-
For a small garden, pulling or digging weeds out—including as much of the root as practical—is often more reliable than homemade sprays.
What about vinegar + salt?
You’ll often see recipes combining vinegar, salt, and dish soap. These can kill vegetation, but salt can accumulate in soil and make it difficult for desirable plants to grow. Dish soap may also injure plants rather than functioning as a true herbicide.
For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend routinely applying salt-based weed killers to garden beds.
A safer approach
For weeds around desirable plants, mulching, hand-pulling, hoeing, or using a targeted herbicide according to its label is generally more predictable than homemade chemical mixtures.
And never mix household cleaning work, especially on young weeds, but they aren’t a magic solution. For long-term control, removing the roots and preventing new chemicals together. In particular, never combine vinegar with bleach, because the mixture can release dangerous chlorine gas.
Bottom line: Homemade weed killers can work, especially on young weeds, but they aren’t a magic solution. For long-term control, removing the roots and preventing new weeds with mulch or ground cover is often more effective.
