Experts Caution Against Using Air Fryers Instead of Ovens: 7 Tips You Should Know
Air fryers aren’t inherently unhealthy or unsafe, and for many foods they can be a convenient alternative to a conventional oven. The concern is usually how they are used, rather than the appliance itself.
7 Tips to Keep in Mind
- Don’t automatically assume air-fried food is healthier.
An air fryer can reduce the amount of added oil needed for some foods, but heavily processed foods remain heavily processed whether they’re air-fried or baked. - Avoid burning or over-browning food.
High-temperature cooking can increase the formation of compounds such as acrylamide in certain carbohydrate-rich foods. Aim for golden rather than dark brown potatoes, bread, and similar foods. - Don’t overcrowd the basket.
Overloading can prevent hot air from circulating properly, resulting in unevenly cooked food. - Use the right temperature.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the food’s cooking guidance. Extremely high temperatures aren’t necessary for every recipe. - Cook meat thoroughly.
An air fryer doesn’t eliminate food-safety risks. Use a food thermometer when appropriate and make sure poultry, meat, and seafood reach safe internal temperatures. - Be careful with excess oil and grease.
You usually need much less oil than with deep-frying. Too much oil can create smoke and make cleanup more difficult. - Clean the appliance regularly.
Remove food residue and grease from the basket and heating area according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Built-up grease can smoke and, in extreme circumstances, become a fire hazard.
So, should you stop using your oven?
No. An air fryer and an oven can both be useful cooking tools. The healthiest choice depends more on what you’re cooking, how much oil and salt you use, the cooking temperature, and your overall diet than on whether you use an air fryer or an oven.
If an article claims that air fryers are dangerous simply because they replace ovens, that’s misleading. The evidence doesn’t support treating ordinary air-fryer use as inherently harmful.
