On some manual-transmission vehicles, “G” on the gear selector means “Granny gear” (also called a crawler gear).
It’s an extra-low first gear designed for situations where you need lots of pulling power at very low speed—such as:
-
Starting with a heavy load
-
Off-road driving
-
Towing
-
Climbing very steep inclines
It usually isn’t intended for normal road driving. On vehicles equipped with a “G” gear, you may start in G instead of 1st when extra torque and very low speed are needed.
