Don’t EVER use magnesium if you’re on any of the following medications

That headline is too absolute. Magnesium can interact with certain medications, but it isn’t something everyone taking medication must avoid. The important issue is usually timing, dose, and kidney function.

Medications that deserve particular attention

  • Tetracycline antibiotics such as doxycycline — magnesium can bind the drug and reduce absorption.
  • Fluoroquinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin — magnesium can also reduce absorption.
  • Levothyroxine — magnesium-containing products can interfere with absorption.
  • Bisphosphonates such as alendronate — magnesium can reduce absorption.
  • Some diuretics and other medicines can affect magnesium levels, so supplementation may require monitoring.
  • Medications in people with significant kidney disease are especially important because the kidneys normally remove excess magnesium.

For several of these interactions, the solution is separating the doses by several hours, not necessarily avoiding magnesium altogether.

Also, magnesium from normal foods is generally much less concerning than taking a high-dose magnesium supplement.

If you tell me the exact medications you’re taking and the magnesium dose, I can check the specific interactions and explain how far apart they should generally be taken.
