Doctors Warn: If You Often Sleep on Your Right Side…
Sleeping on your right side is not generally dangerous for healthy adults. Viral claims that right-side sleeping automatically harms your heart or other organs are misleading.
There are, however, a few situations where sleeping position can affect symptoms:
-
Acid reflux: Some people have more nighttime reflux when sleeping on the right side. Left-side sleeping can reduce reflux for many people.
-
Pregnancy: Side sleeping is generally encouraged later in pregnancy, but individual recommendations can vary.
-
Snoring and sleep apnea: Sleeping on either side is often preferable to sleeping flat on the back for people whose breathing problems are position-dependent.
-
Shoulder or hip discomfort: Staying on one side for hours can aggravate pressure or pain. Switching sides and using supportive pillows may help.
If you sleep on your right side
If you’re comfortable and aren’t experiencing symptoms, there’s usually no reason to force yourself to change positions.
For better alignment, use a pillow that keeps your neck relatively straight and consider placing another pillow between your knees.
If you consistently develop chest pain, shortness of breath, significant palpitations, or severe reflux when lying down, don’t simply blame your sleeping position—those symptoms deserve medical evaluation.
Bottom line: Right-side sleeping is usually fine. The “never sleep on your right side” message is not supported as a general medical rule.
