Clear your throat and lungs of mucus with this recipe – just 2 ingredients

A simple 2-ingredient drink for throat mucus

There isn’t a two-ingredient recipe that can literally “clear your lungs” of mucus. Your lungs have their own mucus-clearing system, and persistent phlegm can have causes such as allergies, postnasal drip, reflux, asthma, smoking, or respiratory infection.

For temporary throat comfort, you can try this simple combination:

🍯 Warm water + honey

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 1–2 teaspoons honey

Method

  1. Add honey to warm—not boiling—water.

  2. Stir well.

  3. Sip slowly.

Honey can soothe an irritated throat and may reduce coughing, but it doesn’t remove mucus from the lungs or treat an underlying infection.

Other things that can help

  • Drink adequate fluids to keep mucus from becoming thick.

  • Try saline nasal spray/rinsing if postnasal drainage is contributing to the mucus.

  • Avoid smoking, vaping, and secondhand smoke.

  • A clean humidifier may help if the air is very dry.

Don’t give honey to children under 1 year old.

If phlegm persists for several weeks, keeps returning, or comes with shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, wheezing, or blood, get medical advice. Severe breathing difficulty or significant coughing of blood requires urgent medical attention.
