Can You Extinguish a Grease Fire Safely?

Dealing with a grease fire requires immediate, precise action, because using the wrong technique can instantly turn a small kitchen flare-up into a dangerous disaster.

The Absolute Golden Rule: NEVER Use Water

  • Why it is dangerous: Water sinks below burning oil, instantly vaporizes into steam, and violently explodes, throwing burning grease droplets across your kitchen and spreading the fire.
  • Never use: Water, flour (which is flammable in the air), or sugar.

How to Extinguish a Grease Fire Safely

  1. Smother It with a Metal Lid or Baking Sheet:
    • How to do it: Slide a heavy metal lid or a large cookie sheet horizontally over the pan to cut off the oxygen supply.
    • Crucial step: Leave the lid on and turn off the burner immediately. Do not lift the lid to check if it’s out; let the pan cool down completely, otherwise the fire can re-ignite when exposed to air.
  2. Smother It with Baking Soda (For Small Fires):
    • How to do it: If the fire is very small and contained inside the pan, dump a generous amount of baking soda on it. Baking soda releases carbon dioxide when heated, which helps smother the flames.
    • Do not confuse it with baking powder or flour, which will feed the fire.
  3. Use a Class K Fire Extinguisher (As a Last Resort):
    • If the fire spreads beyond the pan and onto the stovetop or cabinets, use a fire extinguisher rated for grease/kitchen fires (Class B or Class K). Aim at the base of the fire.
    • Note: A fire extinguisher’s high pressure can blast burning oil out of the pan if aimed incorrectly, so use it carefully and evacuate if the fire gets out of control.
When to Evacuate: If the fire spreads to your cabinets, walls, or appliances, or if you cannot safely reach the stovetop to cover it, get everyone out of the house immediately and call emergency services.
