Are You Urinating a Lot at Night? Here’s Why and What You Can Do About It

Urinating a lot at night: why it happens and what you can do

Waking up once occasionally to urinate can be normal, especially as we get older. Repeatedly waking two or more times a night is called nocturia and can interfere with sleep and quality of life.

Common reasons

  • Drinking a lot of fluid in the evening, especially tea, coffee, or other caffeinated drinks.

  • Alcohol, which can increase urine production and disrupt sleep.

  • An enlarged prostate in men, which can cause a weak stream, difficulty starting, or incomplete emptying.

  • Overactive bladder or bladder irritation.

  • Urinary tract infection (UTI), particularly when there is burning, urgency, or pelvic discomfort.

  • Diabetes, which can cause increased thirst and urination.

  • Swelling in the legs (edema) from conditions such as heart or kidney problems. Fluid can return to the bloodstream when you lie down, increasing nighttime urine production.

  • Sleep apnea, which can be associated with increased nighttime urination.

  • Certain medications, particularly diuretics (“water pills”), depending on when they’re taken.

Things you can try

  • Limit large amounts of fluid for 2–4 hours before bedtime, while still getting adequate fluids during the day.

  • Reduce evening caffeine and alcohol.

  • Empty your bladder immediately before going to bed.

  • If your ankles or legs swell, elevating your legs for a period during the afternoon/evening may help move excess fluid earlier in the day.

  • Don’t change the timing or dose of prescription diuretics without asking your clinician
