5 Common Mistakes That Can Affect Balance in Older Adults

Balance often changes with age, but some everyday habits can increase the risk of unsteadiness and falls. Here are five common issues to watch for:

  1. Ignoring vision problems đź‘“
Poor vision can make it harder to judge steps, obstacles, and changes in flooring. Regular eye examinations and keeping prescriptions up to date can help.

  2. Being too inactive 🪑
Avoiding movement can weaken the legs and reduce balance. Walking, strength exercises, and balance activities appropriate to your abilities can help maintain stability.

  3. Wearing unsuitable footwear 👟
Loose slippers, high heels, or shoes with worn or slippery soles can increase fall risk. Supportive, well-fitting shoes are generally safer.

  4. Getting up too quickly 🧍
Standing suddenly can cause a temporary drop in blood pressure and dizziness, particularly in people taking certain medications. Sitting at the edge of the bed for a moment before standing can help.

  5. Not reviewing medications đź’Š
Some medicines can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or low blood pressure. Older adults taking several medications should periodically ask a healthcare professional or pharmacist to review them.

When balance problems need attention

New or worsening balance problems shouldn’t simply be dismissed as “part of getting older.” Sudden loss of balance, especially with weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, severe headache, or vision changes, can be a sign of a stroke and requires emergency medical attention.
