8 Plants that Help Repel Mice, Spiders & Other Insects

8 Plants That May Help Deter Mice, Spiders & Insects 🌿

Plants can add pleasant scents and may discourage some pests, but they aren’t a guaranteed replacement for sealing entry points or proper pest control. Evidence for plants repelling mice and spiders specifically is also limited.

Eight commonly suggested choices are:

  1. Peppermint — its strong aroma may deter some insects; peppermint oil has stronger evidence than simply growing the plant.
  2. Lavender — fragrant and potentially useful around areas where some insects are unwanted.
  3. Basil — its aromatic leaves may help discourage certain flying insects.
  4. Rosemary — a strongly scented herb that can be grown near doors, windows, or outdoor seating.
  5. Mint — aromatic, but plant it in a container because it spreads aggressively.
  6. Marigolds — commonly grown around gardens and may help with certain insect pests.
  7. Catnip — contains compounds that have demonstrated insect-repellent activity, although results vary by pest and application.
  8. Lemongrass — aromatic and related to citronella; its scent may discourage some mosquitoes, although simply having the plant nearby isn’t equivalent to using a tested repellent.

For mice and spiders

Don’t rely on plants alone. Seal cracks and gaps, keep food in sealed containers, remove clutter, and address sources of water and shelter. For an established mouse infestation, traps or professional pest control are much more reliable than plants.

Also remember that essential oils can be harmful to pets, particularly cats and dogs, so use concentrated oils cautiously.
