Hip pain: what does it mean

“Hip pain: what does it mean?” simply asks:

“What could be causing pain in or around the hip?”

Hip pain can have many causes, depending on where the pain is, what it feels like, and when it occurs.

  • Pain in the groin/front of the hip → can be related to the hip joint, such as arthritis.

  • Pain on the outside of the hip → can come from muscles, tendons, or bursitis around the hip.

  • Pain in the buttock or back that travels toward the hip/leg → sometimes comes from the lower back or irritated nerves rather than the hip itself.

  • Pain after an injury or fall → could indicate a muscle injury, fracture, or other structural problem.

  • Gradually worsening pain and stiffness, particularly with walking → can occur with osteoarthritis.

Seek urgent medical attention after a significant fall/injury if you cannot put weight on the leg, or if the hip is severely painful, swollen, deformed, or accompanied by fever or feeling very unwell.

If you tell me your age, exactly where the hip hurts (front, side, or back), and whether it hurts when walking, sitting, or sleeping, I can explain the most likely possibilities.
