“My Big Toe Was on Fire…” — Can Drinks Really Eliminate Uric Acid?

A painful, hot, swollen big toe can be a classic presentation of gout, which occurs when urate crystals accumulate in a joint. But the idea that five drinks can “naturally eliminate uric acid” is misleading. Drinks may support hydration or dietary goals, but they don’t reliably dissolve gout crystals or replace gout treatment.

Some sensible choices include:

  1. Water 💧 — Staying adequately hydrated supports normal kidney function and uric-acid excretion.

  2. Low-fat milk — Dairy foods, particularly low-fat varieties, are associated with a lower risk of gout attacks in observational research.

  3. Unsweetened coffee ☕ — Moderate coffee consumption has been associated with lower uric-acid levels and gout risk, although it isn’t a treatment.

  4. Unsweetened tea — A reasonable low-sugar beverage, but evidence that it substantially lowers uric acid is limited.

  5. Tart cherry juice 🍒 — Some studies suggest cherries may reduce gout-attack risk, but the evidence isn’t strong enough to consider cherry juice a treatment for high uric acid.

What to avoid

Large amounts of sugary drinks, especially those sweetened with fructose, can increase uric acid and may increase gout risk. Excessive alcohol—particularly beer and spirits—can also contribute to gout attacks.

If you have a suddenly red, hot, extremely painful joint, especially if this is your first attack, get medical advice. Other conditions, including a joint infection, can cause similar symptoms and need prompt treatment.

And if you’ve already been diagnosed with gout, prescribed urate-lowering medication such as allopurinol should not be replaced with drinks or home remedies without discussing it with your clinician.
