8 Plants That May Help Deter Mice, Spiders & Other Insects

Some strongly scented plants contain natural compounds that may discourage certain insects or rodents from lingering nearby. However, plants are not a guaranteed pest-control solution. Keeping food sealed, removing clutter, repairing gaps, and reducing standing water are usually more important for preventing infestations.

Here are eight commonly suggested options:

  1. Peppermint 🌿 — Its strong menthol aroma may discourage some insects and mice from entering areas where the scent is concentrated.

  2. Lavender 💜 — Its fragrance is commonly used to discourage mosquitoes and some other insects.

  3. Basil 🌱 — The aromatic oils in basil may help deter certain flying insects.

  4. Rosemary 🌿 — Its strong scent can be unpleasant to some insects, particularly when the foliage is disturbed.

  5. Marigolds 🌼 — Often planted around gardens because their odor may discourage some insects, although their pest-repelling effects vary.

  6. Catnip 🌱 — Catnip contains nepetalactone, a compound that has demonstrated insect-repelling activity in research.

  7. Mint 🍃 — Several mint varieties have strongly aromatic oils that may discourage some pests.

  8. Lemongrass 🌾 — Its citrus-like aroma is associated with mosquito-repellent properties, although simply growing the plant doesn’t provide the same protection as a properly formulated repellent.

What about mice and spiders?

It’s important not to overstate the evidence. Growing these plants won’t reliably eliminate mice or spiders from a home. For mice, sealing holes and cracks, removing accessible food, and addressing nesting areas are much more dependable. For spiders, reducing other insects—their food source—and sealing entry points can help reduce their presence.

If you’re dealing with a significant infestation, plants should be considered an additional measure rather than a replacement for effective pest control.
