Weird Amlodipine Side Effects That Don’t Usually Get Mentioned

Amlodipine is generally well tolerated, but its official prescribing information lists some less-common or unusual adverse effects that people may not immediately associate with the medication.

Some examples include:

  • Gum enlargement (gingival hyperplasia) — the gums can become enlarged or swollen. Good oral hygiene and dental care are important if this occurs.

  • Taste changes or an unusual taste — changes in taste have been reported.

  • Tingling or altered sensation — paresthesia (pins-and-needles or abnormal sensations) is reported in prescribing information.

  • Tremor — an unusual but documented nervous-system effect.

  • Sleep disturbances or insomnia — some people report difficulty sleeping.

  • Abnormal dreams — reported as an uncommon adverse reaction.

  • Mood changes such as anxiety — these have been reported, although they aren’t among the most common effects.

  • Vertigo — a spinning or movement sensation can occur.

  • Excessive sweating — hyperhidrosis is listed among reported reactions.

  • Hair loss (alopecia) — uncommon, but reported after amlodipine use.

The side effect people most often notice

Swollen ankles or feet are much more typical than the unusual effects above. Amlodipine causes blood vessels to relax, which can allow more fluid to move into tissues around the ankles. The likelihood of edema increases with higher doses.

Don’t automatically blame amlodipine

If you develop a new symptom, it doesn’t necessarily mean the medicine caused it. Other medications, illnesses, dehydration, and unrelated conditions can produce similar symptoms.

And don’t stop amlodipine or change your dose on your own. If a side effect is persistent or troublesome, speak with your prescriber; they can determine whether adjusting treatment is appropriate.

If you tell me which unusual symptom you’re experiencing and your amlodipine dose (5 mg or 10 mg, for example), I can explain how strongly that symptom is associated with amlodipine and what to discuss with your doctor.
