Yes—dry mouth with a burning tongue and patchy areas that come and go can happen, and there are several possible explanations. It isn’t necessarily something serious, but recurring symptoms are worth having a dentist or doctor examine.
Possible causes
- Geographic tongue: Smooth, red patches with irregular borders can move around or change size and shape. It can cause burning or sensitivity, especially with spicy or acidic foods, and may disappear and return. Mayo Clinic

- Oral thrush: A fungal infection can cause soreness, burning, and changes on the tongue or inside the mouth.

What you can do now
Drink water regularly, consider sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva, and temporarily reduce spicy, acidic, alcoholic, and very hot foods/drinks if they make the burning worse. Avoid alcohol-containing mouthwash and don’t use harsh home remedies on the tongue. NIDCR+1
If this keeps coming back, lasts more than a couple of weeks, or is getting worse, make an appointment with a dentist or doctor.
