Homemade Weed Killer: Does It Really Work?

Homemade Weed Killer: Does It Really Work?

Yes—but usually only under limited conditions. The popular homemade mixture of vinegar, salt, and dish soap can damage weeds, but it isn’t the miracle weed killer that many social-media posts suggest.

🌿 What actually works?

  • Vinegar: The acetic acid in vinegar can burn and dry out weed leaves. Household vinegar is typically around 5% acetic acid and works best on very young, small annual weeds. Established weeds and perennial weeds often grow back because their roots remain alive. UConn Extension+1

  • Dish soap: Soap mainly acts as a surfactant, helping a spray spread over and stick to the leaves. It isn’t the primary weed-killing ingredient. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources

  • Salt: Salt can kill vegetation, but repeated use can accumulate in soil and make it harder for desirable plants to grow. Extension specialists generally don’t recommend adding salt to homemade weed killers. Ask Extension+1

  • Boiling water: It can kill small weeds it contacts, but it generally doesn’t eliminate established perennial roots. Ask Extension

⚠️ “Natural” doesn’t automatically mean safe

Stronger horticultural vinegar products can contain 10–20% or more acetic acid and can cause serious skin and eye injuries. Don’t assume that a stronger concentration is simply a safer homemade solution. University of Maryland Extension

Also, vinegar is non-selective: it can damage flowers, vegetables, grass, and other plants it touches.

The most reliable chemical-free approach

For a home garden, pulling young weeds, hoeing, and applying mulch are often more dependable long-term approaches. Mulch also helps prevent new weeds from emerging. Ask Extension+1

Bottom line: Homemade vinegar sprays can provide quick top-kill, especially on young weeds, but they usually won’t permanently eliminate established perennial weeds. And the viral vinegar + salt recipes can create more problems for your soil than they solve.
