Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

That headline is likely referring to plastic wrap around the banana stems. It has some basis in how bananas ripen, but “10 days longer” is not a guarantee.

Bananas naturally produce ethylene, a gas that accelerates ripening. Covering the crown/stems with plastic wrap can reduce ethylene movement and may slow ripening somewhat.

A practical way to keep bananas fresh

  • Keep unripe bananas at room temperature.

  • Wrap the crown/stems with a small piece of plastic wrap; wrapping individual stems may work better than wrapping the whole bunch.

  • Keep bananas away from other ripe, ethylene-producing fruits such as apples and very ripe pears.

  • Once bananas reach the ripeness you like, refrigeration can extend the edible life. The peel may become brown or dark, but the flesh can remain good.

  • Don’t expect a fixed extra 10 days—the result depends on temperature, banana variety, and how ripe they were when purchased.

So the kitchen-item trick is reasonable, but the viral headline exaggerates how predictable the result is.
