A woman’s chin hair is a sign of…See more

A few coarse hairs on a woman’s chin are very common, particularly with increasing age, and by themselves usually don’t indicate a serious problem.

What chin hair can sometimes indicate

  • Normal hormonal changes: Androgens naturally become relatively more prominent with age, especially around and after menopause.

  • Genetics: Some women simply grow more facial hair than others.

  • Hirsutism: Excess coarse hair in a male-pattern distribution can result from increased androgen activity.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): More likely when facial hair occurs along with irregular periods, acne, weight changes, or difficulty becoming pregnant.

  • Less commonly, an androgen-producing ovarian or adrenal condition: This is more concerning when hair growth appears rapidly or is accompanied by a deeper voice, increased muscle mass, severe acne, or other sudden hormonal changes.

Removing chin hair by shaving, tweezing, threading, or waxing does not make it grow back thicker. If facial hair has suddenly increased substantially, it’s worth discussing with a doctor rather than assuming it’s simply aging.
