If You Usually Sleep on Your Right Side, Here’s What You Should Know

Sleeping on your right side is not inherently unhealthy. For most people, the best sleeping position is the one that allows comfortable, uninterrupted sleep without causing pain.

However, there are a few situations where side choice can matter:

  • Acid reflux: Research suggests that lying on the right side can worsen nighttime reflux, while the left side may reduce it for some people.

  • Pregnancy: Side sleeping is generally encouraged later in pregnancy, with individualized advice from a healthcare professional about the most comfortable and appropriate position.

  • Shoulder or hip pain: Sleeping on the painful side may aggravate discomfort. A pillow between the knees can sometimes improve alignment and comfort.

  • Snoring or sleep apnea: Side sleeping is often preferable to sleeping flat on the back because it can reduce airway obstruction in some people.

  • Heart conditions: People with certain heart conditions may find one side more comfortable than the other, but there isn’t a universal rule that everyone with heart disease must sleep on the left.

What about your organs?

You may see viral posts claiming that sleeping on the right side “compresses the heart,” damages the liver, or prevents toxins from leaving the body. These claims are generally oversimplified or unsupported.

If you sleep comfortably on your right side and wake feeling rested, there is usually no reason to change simply because of your age or because a social-media post says you should.

If you’re experiencing nighttime heartburn, breathlessness, chest discomfort, loud snoring, or repeated waking, that’s more important to investigate than which side you sleep on.
