“My Mom Taught Me This Trick to Diminish Dark Age Spots on My Hands in 3 Minutes” — What’s Really Going On?
This is a before-and-after-style skincare claim, and the “3 minutes” part is particularly misleading. There is no established homemade treatment that can permanently fade true age spots in three minutes.
What age spots actually are
Age spots (solar lentigines) commonly develop on the backs of the hands after years of sun exposure. They are usually harmless, but other skin lesions—including some forms of skin cancer—can resemble an age spot. American Academy of Dermatology+1
What actually helps
-
Daily sunscreen: Use broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher on exposed hands. Sun protection helps prevent new spots and can help existing discoloration clear. American Academy of Dermatology+1
-
Evidence-based fading ingredients: Depending on the type of pigmentation, dermatologists may recommend ingredients such as retinoids, vitamin C, glycolic acid, azelaic acid, or kojic acid. These generally take weeks to months, not minutes. American Academy of Dermatology
-
Professional treatments: Chemical peels, cryotherapy, laser therapy, and microdermabrasion can fade age spots more quickly, but they also carry potential side effects and should be appropriately selected by a qualified professional. American Academy of Dermatology
Be careful with “3-minute” home remedies
Don’t use lemon juice, vinegar, bleach, baking soda, toothpaste, or harsh scrubs to try to remove pigmentation. Irritating the skin can actually cause or worsen dark marks, particularly in darker skin tones. American Academy of Dermatology
And if a spot is new, changing in size/color/shape, bleeding, crusting, or looks noticeably different from your other spots, have it examined rather than treating it as a cosmetic blemish. American Academy of Dermatology
