How to Wash Yellowed Pillows: 3 Tips to Make Them Fresh Again

Yellowing is common on pillows because sweat, body oils, saliva, and skincare products gradually build up in the fabric. Here are three practical ways to freshen washable pillows.

1. Check the care label first

Before washing, check whether the pillow is machine washable and follow its temperature and drying instructions. Down, feather, memory-foam, and latex pillows can have very different care requirements.

2. Use a gentle whitening wash

For washable cotton, polyester, or similar pillows:

  • Use your normal laundry detergent.

  • Add an oxygen-based bleach according to the product’s label if the care instructions permit it.

  • Wash according to the pillow’s recommended temperature.

  • Run an extra rinse to remove detergent residue.

Avoid chlorine bleach unless the manufacturer specifically says it’s appropriate; it can damage some fabrics and fillings.

3. Dry the pillow completely

Thorough drying is essential. Follow the care label and make sure the interior is completely dry before putting the pillow back on the bed. Damp filling can develop an unpleasant smell and encourage mold or mildew.

Keep pillows whiter for longer

Use a washable pillow protector underneath your pillowcase and wash pillowcases regularly. This helps reduce the amount of sweat and body oil reaching the pillow itself.

Never wash memory-foam or latex pillows in a washing machine unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. These materials are often damaged by soaking.
