Remedies for Constipation

For occasional constipation, several dietary approaches have

reasonable evidence behind them. They work by increasing stool water/content or stimulating bowel movement.

1. 🥝 Eat kiwi or prunes

  • Kiwi: Eating 2–3 kiwis daily can increase stool frequency and improve stool consistency in some people.

  • Prunes: Prunes contain fiber and sorbitol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol that draws water into the bowel. A small serving of prunes or prune juice can help.

2. 🌾 Increase soluble fiber

Psyllium (ispaghula) husk is one of the better-supported fiber options. Start with a small amount and take it with plenty of water. Increase gradually to minimize bloating.

Other sources include oats, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit, and whole grains.

3. đź’§ Drink enough fluids and move regularly

Adequate fluid intake helps fiber work properly. Walking and other regular physical activity can also encourage normal bowel movements.

A simple routine is: fiber-rich breakfast + adequate water + a short walk + responding when you feel the urge to use the toilet.

When natural remedies aren’t enough

Get medical advice if constipation is persistent or accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, severe abdominal pain/swelling, or inability to pass gas. New constipation in an older adult also deserves medical evaluation.

If you tell me how long you’ve been constipated and your age, I can suggest a practical one-day or seven-day plan.
