One Simple Routine for Age Spots, Sun Damage & Crepey Hands
There isn’t a single solution that can erase age spots, reverse sun damage, and tighten crepey skin instantly. But one inexpensive routine has good evidence behind it for improving the appearance of sun-damaged, aging skin:
The simple approach: sunscreen + retinoid
In the morning: Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to the backs of your hands every day. Reapply when you’re outdoors for extended periods. UV exposure is a major driver of age spots and skin aging.
At night: Consider an over-the-counter retinol applied to the backs of the hands a few nights per week. Retinoids can gradually improve fine lines and skin texture and stimulate collagen production. Start with a small amount and increase gradually if your skin tolerates it.
Moisturizer: Follow with a fragrance-free moisturizer to reduce dryness and make crepey texture temporarily less noticeable.
What about dark spots?
For persistent age spots, dermatologists may recommend treatments such as prescription retinoids, hydroquinone in appropriate circumstances, chemical peels, or laser/light-based treatments. A dermatologist should examine suspicious or changing spots before cosmetic treatment.
Don’t use harsh DIY mixtures such as lemon juice, undiluted vinegar, or bleach on your hands. They can irritate or burn the skin and may actually worsen pigmentation.
Bottom line: If you want the simplest evidence-based strategy, make daily sunscreen the non-negotiable step and consider a gentle retinoid for gradual improvement. Expect results over weeks to months, not five minutes.
