How to Wash Yellowed Pillows: 3 Tips to Keep Them White and Fresh

Yellow stains on pillows are usually caused by sweat, body oils, saliva, and moisture accumulating over time. Before washing, always check the pillow’s care label—memory-foam and latex pillows generally should not be machine-washed.

1. Pre-treat the yellow stains

For washable pillows, apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent to the stained areas and gently work it in. Let it sit for about 15–30 minutes before washing.

For stubborn yellowing, an oxygen-based bleach can be used if the care label permits it. Avoid chlorine bleach unless the manufacturer specifically says it’s safe.

2. Wash thoroughly

Wash two pillows together when possible to keep the washing machine balanced. Use the warmest water allowed by the care label and a normal amount of detergent. An extra rinse can help remove detergent and body-oil residue.

Don’t overload the machine—the pillows need room to move freely.

3. Dry completely

Dry pillows according to their care instructions. For machine-dryable pillows, use a low or moderate heat setting and periodically fluff them.

Make sure they’re completely dry before putting them back on the bed. Moisture trapped inside can encourage mold and mildew.

Keep pillows whiter longer

Use a washable pillow protector underneath your pillowcase, wash pillowcases regularly, and keep pillows dry. This prevents much of the sweat and oil from reaching the pillow itself.

Tip: Don’t mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other household cleaners—dangerous fumes can result.
