7 signs that indicate your heart is in serious danger

If you’re seeing a post claiming that 7 particular symptoms prove your heart is in serious danger, be careful: many symptoms have multiple causes. However, there are several warning signs that should never be ignored.

7 warning signs

  1. Chest pressure, squeezing, or pain
Especially if it lasts several minutes, keeps returning, or occurs with exertion. It can indicate reduced blood flow to the heart.
  2. Shortness of breath
New or unexplained breathlessness—particularly at rest or with minimal activity—can occur with heart disease or heart failure.
  3. Pain spreading beyond the chest
Heart-related pain can radiate to the arm(s), shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen.
  4. Unexplained sweating, nausea, or vomiting
These can accompany a heart attack, sometimes even when chest pain isn’t prominent.
  5. Fainting or near-fainting
This can sometimes result from an abnormal heart rhythm or inadequate blood flow and deserves medical assessment.
  6. New swelling in the feet, ankles, or legs
Fluid retention can occur with heart failure, although swelling also has many other possible causes.
  7. A sudden or significant decline in exercise tolerance
Becoming unusually tired or breathless doing activities that previously felt easy can be a sign that something has changed.

🚨 When it’s an emergency

If someone has persistent chest pressure/pain, severe difficulty breathing, fainting, or chest discomfort accompanied by sweating, nausea, or pain in the arm, back, neck, or jaw, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Don’t wait for a home remedy, supplement, or “heart health” test to determine whether it’s serious. Heart attacks can also occur without classic severe chest pain, particularly in older adults, women, and people with diabetes.
